Batch Brewer

A filter coffee machine (also called a batch brewer) takes away manual work and adds plenty of automation. You just need to know how much coffee and cold water to put into the machine, press start, and enjoy the result!

Unfortunately, the compromise is that most domestic filter coffee machines tend to not extract the best cup, and this happens primarily because they are not capable of heating the water up to the correct temperature.

If you are in the market to buy a new filter coffee machine, make sure it has been certified to reach the correct temperatures. You should also avoid buying a machine with a hot plate. Keeping a jug of coffee on a hot plate will burn the sugars contained in the coffee, producing bitter and unpleasant flavors.

Our recommendation is to focus on a machine with a thermal carafe to keep your coffee warm for a while.

  • Ratio

    • 60g/l for a smooth clean cup (our recommendation)

    • 75g/l for a strong, dark, fully caffeinated cup

    • 50g/l for a lighter, less caffeinated cup

  • Water

    • The temperature of the water is usually set automatically by the machine. The manufacturers usually set the temperature around 90°C | 194°F.

    • If you can adjust the water temperature:

      • 90°C | 194°F for a clean, balanced smooth cup (our recommendation)

      • 96°C | 205°F for a bitter, strong cup.

      • 80°C | 176°F for a sour, fruity cup.

    • Remember: use filtered water with no chlorine whenever possible

  • Grind

    • Coarse / medium-coarse is the ideal grind for a batch brewer

  • Brewing

    • Grind the coffee just before you start brewing or use pre-ground coffee

    • Put the filter paper in the brewing basket, then rinse the paper filter and the basket under the tap using hot water

    • Place the brewing basket in the machine and add fresh filtered water into the machine water tank.

    • Add 30 grams of coffee to brew ½ liter of coffee but remember to check out the options above if you want to try something different

    • Turn on the machine and, as the brew starts, keep an eye on it. If some of the coffee is staying dry, give it a quick stir with a spoon

    • Wait until the brew is done and enjoy your Astraordinary coffee!
